SELF LOVE: 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO LOVE YOURSELF MORE
Loving yourself is one of those lifelong battles. Loving your body? That can be even harder sometimes. In a world where we feel the constant need to be perfect, it can be crushing to inevitably come up short. The truth is, perfection is boring. Being YOU – that’s far more exciting!
So, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we wanted to share five simple ways to love yourself a little more.
CELEBRATE YOUR “FLAWS”
The things we perceive as flaws are usually the things that make us uniquely ourselves. What you may see as a big ole nose is actually a badge of your family history – a trait passed down through many generations. Those scars? We prefer to think of them as proof that you’re a survivor. That post-pregnancy weight? You created LIFE! Amazing! Just because it’s a “flaw” doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful. Change your perception of yourself to show just how amazing your “flaws” are.
REWARD YOURSELF FOR PROGRESS
Committing to a health or fitness journey is hard. It’s not for the faint of heart. Yes, the hard work is worth it in the end, but it’s important to track goals and milestones along the way. Find a way to reward yourself for achieving goals. If your goal is weight loss, keep a little jar that you pay into for every pound lost, then treat yourself to a new wardrobe when you reach your goal weight. If you’re working on strength training, any time you move to a heavier weight or complete more reps, treat yourself to a new workout top or a spa service.
LEARN TO TAKE A COMPLIMENT
When was the last time someone complimented you? How did you respond? Most of us sheepishly blow it off, “oh you’re too kind…” Instead, say thank you! People don’t pass out compliments they don’t mean. Listen to the nice things people see in you and begin to see them in yourself.
TAKE YOURSELF ON A DATE
Between work, school, family, friends, volunteering, etc. we spend so much time giving to others. Remember that it’s important to give to yourself too. Try something new. Something you’ve been dying to do but haven’t yet. Take a pottery class, a dance class, or try the new restaurant that opened in town. Yes, do it alone! You’ll be surprised how great you feel when you realize what you can do by yourself.
CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK
Every single one of us has this little nagging negative voice in the back of our head that says we aren’t good enough. We all want to banish this voice, but it’s easier said than done! Try this trick: for every negative thought that enters your mind, push back with two positive thoughts. For example, say you try on a dress at a store and you hate how it looks on you. That negative voice may say “it’s because you aren’t good enough.” Try saying to yourself (or out loud!), “This dress isn’t good enough, and I look great in so many other things.”
When you start to love yourself, amazing things happen.
